Harrison Owens Yr 11, has become the youngest person ever to swim across the Bristol Channel from Penarth to Clevedon.

Harrison completed the gruelling challenge in just 7 hours 18 minutes – telling Wales Online “I’m still in disbelief that it’s happened, really. It feels a bit unreal but all the training has paid off. There were some times during the swim where I just thought I couldn’t do it.

The challenges weren’t just physical, a lot of it was mental. But I’d always think of all the people who had sponsored me and were behind me… I’d think of how every stroke I do is one stroke closer to the end – and that even though at the moment it was absolute pain, it would all be done by dinner time.”

Allowing for the fierce tides in the channel, the distance covered was over 15 and a half miles .

The day after completing the swim – and setting a new record – Harrison was committed to play rugby, but confessed afterwards he only managed to get halfway through the match before falling asleep on the field.

The swim was to raise funds for the charity the Huntington’s Disease Association.
